2019 G7 Summit in Biarritz August 24-26

First announced in June 2018 during the last G7 Summit in Canada, the 2019 G7 Summit will be presided by France and will be held in Biarritz from August 24th to the 26th, 2019. Heads of States of the world’s 7 biggest economic countries, as well as many partners, organizations and not-for-profit will therefore gather in the European’s Surfing capital.

It’s no surprise that everyone in Biarritz will definitely feel the presence of all delegations ! It’s a major international event gathering the United States of America, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Canada and the European Union. Furthermore, this event will draw attention to our beautiful town. And consequently, it will of course change a little bit our daily lives as residents and travelers during these 3 days of discussions.

But do not worry ! Even if all eyes will be on Biarritz’s city center for these few days, Biarritz’s life won’t stop nevertheless !

2019 G7 Summit : What will be discussed ?

The 2019 G7 Summit will be focused on one particular objective : fighting against inequality. Similarly, other discussion topics during France’s Presidency for the G7’s 45th Summit will be : climate and biodiversity, Africa, digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI). Finally, other topics will be covered such as the overhauling of the G7’s format with civil society mobilization.

Security deployment for the weekend in Biarritz center

As a result, a major security deployment will be done in Biarritz city center. It’s essential to welcome safely all heads of states, journalists and security services !

This isn’t unusual, it’s a normal procedure for this type of event ! For this reason, Biarritz has defined 2 zones at the summit site :

2019 G7 Summit

  • ZONE 1 (in red) : the whole coastline from the Fishermen Port to Biarritz Lighthouse. The city Casino, Hotel du Palais, Bellevue Casino and City hall… This is where meetings and discussions will take place. They will therefore be under close surveillance during these 3 days.
  • ZONE 2 (in blue) : the rest of town, from Rocher de la Vierge to the main roads.

I’m spending holidays in Biarritz during the 2019 G7 Summit : What do I need to know ?

Access to these two safety zones in Biarritz will be limited but not forbidden. There will be no restrictions to you as a Keyweek traveler ! If you have rented one of our holiday homes (or plan on renting one soon) located in Zone 1 or 2, you will need to pass security checkpoints with a badge to access your home. Biarritz’s City Hall will regularly keep us informed on these safety zones, and how to obtain these travelers’ badges.

Our KEYWEEK Concierges will keep you informed regarding this topic so you can keep up with what’s happening and make plans accordingly.

Consequently you won’t be able to drive around or park in Zone 1 from Friday August 23rd to Monday August 26th.

Another useful information to take into consideration. During the event of the 2019 G7 Summit in Biarritz, nautical activities such as boating or surfing will be forbidden on both centrally located beaches Grande Plage and Miramar. If you plan on surfing during this special weekend, you will have to find another temporary surf spot ! 🙂

As you will have understood, there is nothing to worry about if you have booked your KEYWEEK home in Biarritz during the 2019 G7 Summit ! If you have any questions regarding your holidays from August 24th to the 26th, feel free to ask our Concierges ! They will keep you regularly informed as the summit is organized. Let’s not forget that another French seaside resort was “the center of the world” during 3 days in 2011, Deauville, and… everything went well !

Ryanair obviously didn’t know about the G7 being held in Biarritz- they sold me a ticket. So I can’t fly to Biarritz nor can I take the train because they are cancelled. So how do I get to Biarritz?

    • Marie KW on

      Hello John,

Thanks for your comment. I’ve just checked on Ryanair’s website and now it doesn’t allow bookings to Biarritz from Friday 23rd to Monday 26th of August for the G7. Unfortunately you must have booked your tickets before that. Have you checked with them if they can do something about it ? Refund ? Book you on other flights ? If you can cancel your tickets and arrive on the 22nd or arrive the week after the G7 ? If you can’t, you could always fly to Bordeaux and rent a car (see if Ryanair can cover the cost of a rental car?), Bordeaux is approximatively 2 hours away from Biarritz by car. Hope that helps ! Marie

    Hi Marie
Thanks for your reply. Ryanair have done nothing except offer a refund but I’ve booked accommodation on the 24th.
I booked the car hire via Ryanair but they wanted an additional £200 which was reduced to £120 for picking the car up at Bordeaux. It was either fly to Bordeaux on cancel. I feel I’m stuck. I still haven’t got a car and the trains aren’t running.

    Hi John,

I’m sorry to hear about Ryanair not helping at all. I hope you do find a way to come to Biarritz and visit our lovely region !
